Back in the day when I worked for the Discovery Channel (note to self: update “About” page with my background and how this blog came to be), Shark Week was a really big deal. There was always a huge promo and lots of work leading in to the event with the pay-off of a ratings spike for the network. I hear this year they have a giant shark called Chompie growing out of the Silver Spring headquarters. Good stuff.
Even though it’s been a few years since my Disco days, I always know when Shark Week is happening. How can we not? The TV promos are mesmerizing, print ads reel in attention, and there are often events around town to help get viewers hooked.
This year, DC’s National Aquarium is part of the hoopla, presenting Shark Weekend today and tomorrow, July 31 – August 1. (Yes, there really is an aquarium in the city!) Visitors can check out several shark species, touch a shark tooth, chat with shark experts, and enjoy lots of shark-related activities. The event runs from 9:30am – 3:30pm both days.
The National Aquarium is located at 1401 Constitution Ave NW, in the lower level of the Department of Commerce building.
