Many of us have had our eye on the Capitol Riverfront, the area along the Anacostia River just five blocks south of the U.S. Capitol, for awhile now. The Nats have been settled in for a few years, so the big question is, what’s next? Historically, the Washington Navy Yard anchored the neighborhood, but these days baseball is the main attraction, and the Capitol Riverfront BID has even bigger plans for the locale.
The Yards Park is a big part of those plans, offering a beautiful space to enjoy along the river. This includes open grassy areas, a boardwalk, iconic bridge, and water feature. Even more is in the works, but everything just mentioned opens to the public today. The Capitol Riverfront BID is celebrating this weekend, and you’re invited to join the fun and check out the new space.
The Yards Park Grand Opening will take place Friday – Sunday, but Saturday, Septmber 11 will include a whole day’s worth of activities for the family. Kids can enjoy a moonbounce, face painting, balloon hats, lawn games, arts and crafts, and live entertainment by Free Lobster Buffet, Mr. Skip and more fun performers. There will also be fitness classes, boat house and bike share demos, trapeze performers, food trucks and restaurant samplings, lawn games for adults, and a beer garden.
Admission to the event and activities are free, just plan to pay for food (though there will be some samples to try). The Grand Opening on Saturday will run from 9am – 10pm, and a full schedule of events is available here. The Yards Park is located at 10 Water Street SE.
