Monday – Take advantage of the beautiful weather at the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. The water lilies and lotus flowers should be near their peak this time of year. Take a nature walk to see the blooms as well as ponds filled with giant lily pads and other interesting marsh plants. Look for geese, great blue herons, turtles, frogs, and tiny fish on the way. The park is open 7am – 4:30pm. Admission is free.
Wednesday – Learn about the area’s wildlife, enjoy hands-on activities, and discover the night sky at the Rock Creek Nature Center. With all kinds of animal and plant exhibits, a Discovery Room , and planetarium with a free show at 4pm, there is plenty to keep kids engaged. If weather permits, hike a trail on the grounds around the center, too. Open Wednesday – Sunday, 9am – 5pm.
Thursday – Take the kids to shop at the market, tend to the ranch, visit animals in the pet store, decorate cupcakes, and do some art projects — all possibilities in the Playseum’s various themed rooms and crafts areas. Visit the Capitol Hill or Bethesda location and plan on lunch while you’re out; both are convenient to many eateries for a pre- or post-play meal. Admission is $6/person (siblings under 10 months are free) and is good for the whole day.
Friday – Be among the first audiences to see Goldilocks! at The Puppet Co. It’s the first day of the show’s run through July 15. Show times are 10am and 11:30am. Tickets are $10, but Goldstar currently has a 50% discount here. (You can also enter to win a four-pack of tickets for a performance this weekend through this KFDC giveaway.)
