Election Day Outings

Owen at the polls four years ago... we're (hopefully!) avoiding the lines by going after school today.

In honor of the day, here are some “presidential” ideas for activities with the kids:

– Go memorial hopping on the National Mall and pay tribute to presidents of the past. The Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, and FDR Memorial could make a nice walking tour.  Or, pick one or two and hang out for awhile.

– Visit the digs of first POTUS George Washington at Mount Vernon. The estate and gardens are open 9am – 4pm. Admission is $15/adult, $7/ages 6-11, free for children 5 and under.

– Head to the National Museum of American History where you can view relics from many presidencies — “The American Presidency: A Glorious Burden“, a dazzling display of First Lady dresses, serving dishes and other pieces used for White House entertaining, and much more.

– Check out the Hello Kitty for President pop-up at Living Social’s 918 F Street.

– Enjoy the crisp, sunny day at Theodore Roosevelt Island. Hike the easy trails, look out for wildlife, and explore the Memorial Plaza to learn about the legacy of America’s 26th president.

– Take a tour of Lincoln’s Cottage, where the 16th president lived from 1862-1864 and developed the Emancipation Proclamation. Admission is by guided tour only and on a first come, first served basis. Hours are 9:30am – 4:30pm. Admission is $15/adult, $5/ages 6-12, free for 5 and under.

– Get a glimpse of where the President and Congress work on a tour of the Capitol Building.

– See election-inspired exhibits at the Newseum. “The Eyes of History 2012” showcases images and videos of the past year from the White House News Photographers Association. “Every Four Years” focuses on presidential campaigns and the media. These are just a couple among many exhibits that feature the presidency in some way.

– Walk by the White House and pose for photo ops on this historic day.

– Wax presidential at Madame Tussauds, where The Presidents Gallery features wax figures of all 44 POTUS. Hours are 12-6pm. Admission is $22.26/adults, $18.02 ages 4-12, free for 3 and under. Save 15% by purchasing in advance online.
