Review: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe at Adventure Theatre

lionwitch1

The holiday season always brings an extra big selection of family shows to local stages, and it can be difficult to decide which to see. Well, I’m about to make it a little easier for you with this: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe at Adventure Theatre should definitely make the cut.

This unique take on the C.S. Lewis classic literally tells the tale of the four Pevensie siblings’ well-chronicled adventures in Narnia. The play begins with Lucy and Peter actually relaying the story to the audience years later, then recreating it for us as we’re drawn into the wardrobe — and back to that time — with them and the several other characters in the show.

Yet, there are only two actors in this production. If you’re wondering how they can possibly pull this off, the quick answer is a fantastic balance of great acting, clever stage direction, creative costumes and props, a well-designed (and beautiful!) set…and a little magic.

Dazzling tricks and neat surprises keep the audience delighted during the adventure as the brothers and sisters enter the land of Narnia, eventually encountering and battling the White Witch along with Aslan the lion. And while the hour-long play doesn’t capture all of the details, it still gets to the pulp of the story — and with fun, imaginative flair.

One of my favorite aspects of the show was interaction with the audience. From the very beginning, Lucy and Peter turn around with surprise to see us there. Our presence is what actually launches them into their story, and they continue to engage throughout. They reach their hands out to people, ask us to weigh in on decisions, even listen to a little girl in the front row as she unexpectedly reveals Lucy’s location during a game of hide and seek.

When I asked Owen and Sasha about their favorite parts, she named that very game, and he described a snow ball fight. Mine was the moment Narnia was revealed, and we saw the ingenuity of the set. We all agreed, though, there were loads of great moments we could have chosen.

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is running at Adventure Theatre through December 31, with both weekday and weekend performances. Tickets are $19.50 and can be purchased in advance online or by calling 301.634.2270.

See Your Child Light Up the Adventure Theatre Stage in Shrek, Jr.!

shrek-jr

Many a child has probably been to one of Adventure Theatre’s wonderful shows and imagined what it was like to be on the stage, in the spotlight, performing in front of an audience. But they don’t just have to imagine it — in ATMTC’s Student Productions, they can actually experience it!

Adventure Theatre offers intensive performance and training opportunities to perform in fully produced student productions, ensemble showcases, and recitals. This winter, kids in grades 4-6 can be part of Shrek, the Musical, Jr.. Rehearsals will take place at their Wintergreen Plaza location in Rockville in the evenings while school in session, and during the days over Winter Break. And the grand finale — the performances — will be held at the theater in Glen Echo Park, on the very stage they have watched some of their favorite productions over the years.

Everyone’s favorite ogre is back in this hilarious stage spectacle, based on the Oscar-winning smash hit film and outrageous Broadway musical. Beauty is in the eye of the ogre. Shrek leads a cast of fairytale misfits on an adventure to rescue a princess and find true acceptance. Part romance and part twisted fairy tale, an irreverently fun show with a powerful message for the whole family.

With imaginative sets and costumes, and a host of over-the-top roles, there’s a part for everyone in the dazzling adventure story. This magical opportunity begins December 19 and runs through January 15 — see the complete schedule for details. No audition is required. Tuition is $800, and you can register online here.

Adventure Theatre MTC’s offers even more programs for kids of all ages, including Winter Break camps. And I can vouch for them — both of my children have participated in the summer program and loved it!

lion_witch_web_lg

Halloween might be over, but not all of the witches have gone away. At least one is still lurking about, awaiting your arrival in Narnia. A land located (this holiday season, anyway) right in the heart Glen Echo Park.

This December, Adventure Theatre is bringing the beloved children’s classic The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe to life in a two-actor show. And from what I hear, it promises to be a beautiful and magical experience. I’ve also got a Family 4-Pack of tickets to give away to one lucky KFDC reader!

Recommended for all ages, this one-hour version of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe follows Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy as they are sent to live in the countryside home of professor Digory Kirke. As Lucy explores the house, she discovers a secret portal to a magical world called Narnia. With an evil White Witch ruling the kingdom, can Lucy, her new friend Mr. Tumnus, and her family band together to save Narnia?

Find out at Adventure Theatre from December 2-31! Tickets are $19.50 and can be purchased online or at the Box Office (I always recommend getting them in advance). Of course, you can also try winning them through the giveaway.

‘Jumanji’ at Adventure Theatre: Review, Discount, & Giveaway!

Catch "Jumanji" at Adventure Theatre through August 28

Catch “Jumanji” at Adventure Theatre through August 28

Before going to see Jumanji at Adventure Theatre, I got a little inside info from my contact there that “the show is probably the funniest we have ever had in my 6 years here.” Now, that’s a rather lofty statement to make about a production. Combine that with press materials describing a “4-D jungle experience for its patrons,” and my expectations for great, rollicking entertainment were pretty high.

Based on the book by Chris Van Allsburg, Jumanji tells the story of Judy and Peter, a sister and brother who find a mysterious old board game while their parents are out. They decide to play it, then adventure — and some wild magic — ensue, transforming their living room into a world beyond their imaginations and sending them on a incredible journey to claim Jumanji. (Many parents, and maybe even some of your kids, have seen the 90’s movie version starring Robin Williams.)

The jungle, a monsoon, an erupting volcano, monkeys, lions, and a giant snake are all part of the show, a feat that might seem impossible to pull off on the cozy Adventure Theatre stage. But the creative execution, featuring a superb cast, brilliant puppetry, and fun elements that surprise and engage the audience bring the story to life with excitement and humor for both children and adults.

Ryan Dalusung and Billie Krishawn are fantastic as Peter and Judy, nailing the brother/sister dynamic with typical sibling quibbles and silly jabs at each other. (Sasha actually whispered to me at one point, “That’s like me and Owen!”) But the character who had me actually LOL-ing was The Guide. Played by Elan Zafir, he’s like an awkward Indiana Jones meets J. Peterman from Seinfeld — in the most hilarious way possible.

Expectations, met! And I’m pretty certain yours and your kids’ will be, too.

Jumanji is running at Adventure Theatre through August 28, with performances on most Saturdays and Sundays at 11am, 2pm, and 4pm, and on Mondays at 10:30am. Tickets are $19.50, and you can get 15% off until for any date if you purchase by July 15, just use the code KFDC at checkout. Recommended for ages 4 and up.
