We’re 6 in Blog Years!

Wow. It was six years ago today that I launched KidFriendly DC with a short post about the National Building Museum’s new Book of the Month program. It seems like yesterday — a true testament that time really does fly when you’re having fun.

At the time, I wasn’t even exactly sure what KFDC would be. I just knew that I wanted to fuse my professional experience with my passions — for adventure, this city, my children — and give back to DC and the people and places that make it such an amazing place to live, visit, raise a family, call home. I think KFDC has achieved that. I hope so, anyway.

And, of course, I have to say THANK YOU for following. I hope you enjoy reading KFDC as much as I enjoy creating it.

So, I have to admit this blog birthday kind of snuck up on me. Luckily, Facebook’s memories feature dropped an old status update in my feed as a reminder, and I have come up with a fun and easy way to celebrate: A giveaway for a getaway! That’s right, one lucky KFDC reader has a chance to win a CertifiKid voucher for one of these family escapes:

* 2-Night Waterfront Stay in Chincoteague, VA

* 2-Night Cabin or 3-Night Campsite Getaway in Williamsburg, VA
+ 4 Passes for Admission to National Building Museum Exhibits

* 2-Night Virginia Beach Getaway

*Be sure to read all fine print regarding dates and restrictions for each getaway!

Giveway: For a chance to win your choice of one of the above CertifiKid getaways, simply leave a comment below telling me the best experience you’ve had that you learned about from KFDC. To be eligible, you must follow KidFriendly DC on Facebook and subscribe to the blog (sign up on the left). It would also be awesome if you could click on the “Vote” button to the right and cast yours for KidFriendly DC (though not required). This giveaway will run through Sunday, February 28, then a winner will be selected and notified shortly thereafter. Good luck!

Here’s a little photo contest to start your Sunday — and I think this might be a tricky one. If you think you know where this image was taken, tell me the location in the comments. All correct answers will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a TWO of these deals on admission to Washington Harbour Ice Rink (good for four people total). And congrats to KFDC reader Melissa, who won the last “Where in DC?” contest. That photo was snapped at the Safeway on Columbia Road in Adams Morgan.

Where in DC?

Test your knowledge of DC scenes for a chance to win a prize! If you think you know where this photo was snapped, tell me the location in the comments. Even if you don’t know, go ahead and take a guess.

All correct answers will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win FOUR of these deals for a one-hour session at Flight Trampoline Park in Springfield, Va. It’s super fun — you can read more about it in this KFDC post.

The contest will run through Friday, then a winner will be drawn at random and notified this weekend. Good luck!

And congrats to KFDC reader Katie, who won the last “Where in DC?” prize. That photo was taken at the Lincoln Memorial, the words engraved on the landing 18 steps below Lincoln’s statue in recognition of the 40th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous speech.

Cruisin’ the Potomac

A lovely vista from the bow of the boat

A vista from the bow of the boat

A few weeks before the first predicted cherry blossom peak, I scooped up a deal from Certifikid for a family sightseeing cruise on the Potomac that promised great views of the trees in bloom and other iconic DC attractions. I figured it would be a novel way for us to see the blossoms and enjoy an outing on the water, something we very rarely get to do.

Well, two peak date predictions later, we still hadn’t taken that cruise. Whether it was the late bloom or my own disorganization/laziness/procrastination that threw off our plans, I really can’t say, but by the time we put the deal to use, the blossoms had come and gone.

However, the offer was good for several months, so I decided to use it when my brother was in town for a visit in late April. It was easy enough — we already had our voucher, so we just headed over to the Washington Harbour in Georgetown where Capitol River Cruises launches The Nightingale for 45-minute tours on the Potomac to see the sights along with historical narration provided by the crew.

We didn’t follow the tour talk so much, but still enjoyed views of the places it covered — the Watergate, Kennedy Center, Key & Memorial Bridges, Jefferson Memorial, Washington Monument, Roosevelt Island, and LBJ Memorial were among the sites we saw. It was relaxing to be out on the water on a pretty spring day, enjoying a perspective of the city we don’t usually get to see. And the kids, they were just excited to be on a boat.

Concessions are available for purchase — we grabbed some drinks and snacks to tide over our hungry kids (and thirsty adults) before a late lunch back in Georgetown.

Capitol River Cruises has daily departures April through October from 11am – 9pm. Cost is $14/adults, $7/ages 3-12 on location. Purchase in advance online for $11/adults, $6/children. Tours launch from the Washington Harbour at 31st and K Streets NW.

The local deal sites offer discounted river cruises all the time — ours was a steal at $20 for two adults and two kids, while it’s regularly $14 per adult. Groupon and the Capitol Deal both have them going on right now.
