We might call it summer, but I like to think of it as BBQ season. Even though we fire up the grill year-round, it’s definitely a more frequent activity from June to September when the days are longer, the kids stay up later, and life automatically switches to casual mode.
So, we’ve made some family dinners on the grill, but have yet to throw a really big BBQ this season. But this weekend should provide some good inspiration. The National Capital Barbecue Battle is on this Saturday and Sunday, June 26-27. BBQ teams from all over the country will converge on the National Mall for a cook-off, and we the public get to reap the benefits (ie, samples!). Think ribs, pulled pork, chicken, beef brisket (sorry, veggies), and it’s coming from folks who cook to win, so you know it’s going to be finger-licking delicious.
The action takes place on the Mall between 9th and 14th Streets. And it’s not just about the BBQ battle—there will be live music, kids rides and activities (think moonbounce, climbing wall, playground fun), cooking demos, and much more for the family to enjoy. And when you’re done, you can go cool off in a museum or check out the Smithsonian Folklife Festival also taking place on the Mall.
The event runs on Saturday from 11am – 9pm and Sunday 11am – 7:30pm. Admission is $10/adults, $5/kids, 6 and under are free.
