The Time is Ripe

If you had told me back in February that the high 80’s would seem like cool weather, I probably would have choked on snow from laughing so hard. But here we are five months later, and I’m nearly ready to dig my parka out of the basement… yeah, major exaggeration, but you know what I mean.

Compared to some of the insane heat and humidity we’ve had this summer, this weekend’s predicted forecast is pretty mild. And the timing couldn’t be better—some of the season’s best crops are at their peak and ready for picking. That’s right, you and the kids can get out in the fields of area farms and harvest some fruits and veggies without fear of heatstroke (though a hat and hydration are never a bad idea).

Blackberries and peaches seem to be the prime produce now, but tomatoes, potatoes, watermelons, beets, and other yummy delights from the earth are also available. Here’s all you need to know to reap the goodness at our local farms:

Homestead Farm
Pick-your-own: Thornless blackberries, peaches, watermelons, tomatoes
What else: The market is overflowing with already picked tomatoes, sweet corn, and other summer vegetables all grown at their farm. The Country Kitchen is open weekends only, generally 11am – 4pm.
When: Daily 9am – 6 pm (Picking ends at 5:30)

Butler’s Orchard

Pick-your-own: Thornless blackberries, blueberries, and flowers (bring your own containers)
What else: Farm market has peaches, tomatoes, summer squash, cantaloupe, corn, baked goods, and more.
When: Tuesday– Friday 8:30am – 6pm, Saturday – Sunday 8:30am – 5pm
Where: 22200 Davis Mill Road, Germantown, MD 20876

Larrliand Farm
Pick-your-own: Thornless blackberries, peaches, beets, squash, plums, tomatoes, raspberries
What else: Dig your own sweet onions and leeks. The market has plenty of already picked blueberries, peaches, cantaloupes, watermelon, corn, tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, and more.
When: Tuesdays 9am – 8pm, Wednesday – Friday 9am – 6pm, Saturday – Sunday 9am – 5pm, closed Mondays
Where: 2415 Woodbine Rd, Woodbine, MD 21797

Hollin Farms
Pick-your-own: Peaches, sweet, raspberries, blackberries, tomatoes, string beans, peppers, squash, swiss chard
What else: Cash or checks only. They also sell natural beef and pasteurized pork.
When: Daily 9am – 5pm
Where: 1524 Snowden Road, Delaplane, VA 20144

Great Country Farm
Pick-your-own: Peaches, blackberries
What else: Hayrides, Putt-Putt, Little Farmer play area and Imagination Village, farm animals in the barnyard, picnic areas, catch and release fishing. Admission is $8/person.
When: Daily 9am – 6pm
