Forget Saturday morning cartoons. Start the weekend with some free live entertainment at one of the city’s grandest theatres. Saturday Morning at the National, a wonderful kids program sponsored by Marriott, kicks off its 2010-11 season September 18 and will continue through the spring with free children’s performances almost every Saturday.
The first show is a production of “The Ugly Duckling” presented by Bright Star Theatre. Volunteers play a chicken, a turkey, and a flamingo, and everyone learns lessons in friendship, kindness, and acceptance.
Performances take place at 9:30am and 11am, and tickets are required for admission. Free tickets are distributed half an hour prior to the start of shows on a first-come first-served basis. Only one ticket per person, and all attendees must be standing in line to receive a ticket. Children must be accompanied by an adult who remains present for the entire performance. Seating is limited, so get there early!
National Theatre is located at 1321 Pennsylvania Avenue NW. The website says shows are best appreciated by children ages 4 and up. More information and the schedule of performances this season is available on the National Theatre website.
