We may not need an excuse to get outside and enjoy a great day, but it never hurts to have one, especially when an official designation by the White House is involved. Unbeknownst to me until recently, June has been deemed “Great Outdoors Month” by the guys in the big house on Pennsylvania Ave., and its signature event, National Get Outdoors Day, is this Saturday, June 11.
This isn’t just a call-to-action for folks to step outside. All around the country there will be events celebrating the occasion with a day full of activities that encourage healthy, active outdoor fun.
The DC-area event will take place at Kingman Island from 11am – 3pm. The public is invited to try fishing, canoeing, rock climbing, mountain biking, golfing, and much more. There will also be face painting, live music, bird watching, costumed characters, flower planting, GPS activities, and a chance to win cool prizes.
Kingman Island is located on the Anacostia River near RFK Stadium — you can find directions here. And after you’ve celebrated the outdoors, go check out the Kingman Island Bluegrass Festival taking place at the venue the same day from 1-8pm.
